Using ZAppLink is easy. Simply rotate the model to the desired angle and activate ZAppLink. ZBrush will automatically handle the process of dropping the model and sending the canvas to Photoshop. When you return to ZBrush, ZAppLink will also automatically handle the process of transferring what you've painted to polypaint and picking the model up again. Using ZAppLink you can take advantage of photoshops layers, blending effects, filters etc.

ZAppLink provides powerful tools for all aspects of ZBrush use. Whether painting the ZBrush canvas or painting on a 3D model in Edit mode, ZAppLink has features to make your work easier -- and faster.
official guide:

1) Fade on?
2) Mesh Density:
3) Using perspective and fade. It is preferable to keep perspective off while using ZAppLink.
4) Using "Set target App". Q: Pressing the ZAppLink button opens some other application instead of Photoshop.
5) Storing views for your model by going to tool>document>Zapplink properties
(http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=73078)There you can store specific views of the object that you can recall later. So if you move the object in the canvas you just need to click the button that goes with the view you want.
6) When I finish painting in Photoshop and alt tab to Zbrush I get a Re-enter(unchanged)message?why?
Why do I get a Re-enter(unchanged)message when I finish painting in Photoshop and alt tab to return to ZBruh?
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=72320
it ia because ZBrush thinks nothing has changed. You just need to alt tab back to photoshop and save again and then go back into ZBrush. It just didn't see the update...usually happens on when first entering ZappLink and PS wasn't already open.
7) Mirroring geometry for symmetrical texture painting
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=71571
After you have finished painting one side, clone your model. Delete the unpainted side, then use SubTool Master to mirror it. Append it back to the original model. Select the original, turn off Zadd, turn on Rgb (Intensity 100) and use Tool>SubTool>Project All.
This will copy the polypaint from the mirrored original, applying it to the unpainted side of your model. You'll now have a fully painted model in perfect symmetry and can convert the polypaint to texture for export.
8) Can I use PM and ZappLink together?
Do not use Projection Master to drop the model before using ZAppLink. That is an incorrect workflow. ZAppLink handles dropping the model and picking it up again automatically, and adding PM to the mix will cause problems. If you're using ZAppLink, you don't need to use PM.
9) ZAppLink opens photoshop CS4 but the document doesn't open.
If you're running Vista you should set both ZBrush and Photoshop to run as administrator. Simply right-click on their executables (not desktop shortcuts) and choose that option from the context menu.
To run in admin mode: Be logged into the account from which you run ZBrush. Browse to the ZBrush 3 folder. Right-click on the ZBrush3.exe and choose "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.
10) Why doesn't the ZAppLink plugin appear in the menu ?
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=70351
The only way a plugin does not show up in the interface is typically if it's not installed correctly.
11) What is the difference between Polypainting and ZAppLink?
Polypainting lets you paint directly on your model. It doesn't convert your work to a texture until you tell it to.ZAppLink on the other hand lets you paint on the texture that you have assigned to your model besides allowing you to paint in the painting application of you choice and transfer the painting to the your model as polypaint.

(talks aboout ZAppLink for poly paint or texture painting)
If you have a texture applied to the model, then ZAppLink will paint texture. If no texture is applied, then ZAppLink will polypaint.
12) Why does using pure black in ZAppLink create artifacts in my textures?
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=65557
zbrush pure black as an alpha in relation to textures. Therefore using pure black might yield weird results. Try a very dark gray instead.

14) How do I keep the colours/texture that I painted using Zapplink after I close Zbrush?
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=63928
Before closing ZBrush, save your ZTL. Tool>Save As. You'll be asked if you wish to save the texture as well. (If a texture is applied to the model, that is.) This saves the texture with the model as part of the ZTL format.
Alternatively, before closing ZBrush you can also select the texture in the Texture palette and then choose Texture>Save As. When you load the model in another session, you'll also have to import the texture again.
This will copy the polypaint from the mirrored original, applying it to the unpainted side of your model. You'll now have a fully painted model in perfect symmetry and can convert the polypaint to texture for export.

15) How do I avoid getting the same views for the right and left of my model while creating the character sheet?
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=61785
Try the following:
In the ZAppLink Properties menu, press the Clear To button, followed by Top. Then repeat with Bottom. Now on the canvas, rotate the model so that you have the desired top view. In ZAppLink Properties, turn on the Top button, which will also turn on Bottom. Now clear the Left and Right options. Rotate the model on the canvas to what you want for the Right view. Then turn on the Right option, which will turn on Left.
Creating the character sheet should now give you what you want.

17) Why is the texture painting done in Photoshop blurring upon entering ZBrush?
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=59955
Make sure you have enogh mesh density for the texture painting to transfer properly to your model in ZBrush. Topology also plays a role in this. In areas where there are relatively fewer polygons, the texture might get a little blurred. Subdivide your model as much as possible. If you cannot subdivide anymore simply convert the poly paint to an image texture and apply any further texture painting to the texture, which is independent of mesh polycount. Also ensure that you are at the highest subdivision before using ZAppLink.
If your model will be zoomed in a lot you will need to make your texture quite large.
When painting textures using ZAppLink you need to be aware of getting a 1-to-1 ratio between canvas pixols and texture pixels.
18) Can I use ZappLink to create masks?
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=59129
Yes, you can. Paint grayscale values on your model in Phtoshop (on any other 2D painting program )and then use that as a mask in ZBrush ( masking> mask by intensity, and inverse to switch between masked and unmasked areas ). Once masked, you can use things like Tool>Deformation>Inflate to deform the model, or simply use the standard or inflate brushes to sculpt on your model.
19) Can I use ZAppLink to store views in between sessions?
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=69288&highlight=ZAppLink
Yes you can. Position your model the way you want to and simply go to Document > ZAppLink properties ( located at the bottom ) and select the matching camera angles for your models position, that is, front, back, right, left, top, bottom, custom 1 or custom 2. The selected camera angle or angles will be locked and highlighted. Now press Save Views. The next time you launch ZBrush and load your model, go to Document > ZAppLink properties > load views >navigate to your .vws file and load it. All the saved views will be activated. Press on the view you want and the model will quickly set into the position where you left off in your previous session.
20) Do I have to retain the name of the layers when I paint my textures in the photoshop file?
Yes. You also have to keep the mask on layer 1 intact. In order to preserve your mask move it up and place it on the top most layer temporarily. Now add as many layers as you wish and when you are done before reentering ZBrush you should be left once again with three layers. (1) The background layer : Fill ZShading (do not edit), locked by default (2) Layer 1, which is your final flattened layer with all the texture painting. Move the mask down and apply it to the layer again (3) Top most layer : ZShading (do not edit) locked by default.
21) Will ZAppLink transfer my mask to Photoshop?
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=71647&highlight=ZAppLink
22)Using ZAppLink with subtools ?Removing seams.
The first approach is suitable in the case of more grainy textures. When you have two adjacent subtools to paint on, select one of the subtools, press ZAppLink and do your painting in Photoshop. Now select the other subtool and send it into photoshop. The previous painted subtool will still be visible. After you are done painting you can use the rubber stamp tool on your active subtool in Photoshop to remove the seam between the two subtools.
The second aproach is more handy when it comes to painting across subtools, specially where patterns and fine lines are involved. Turn on the visibility for the subtools you want to paint across and Zoom into your model in the area where the subtools meet . Save your models position by pressing Document > ZAppLink properties > Use custom 1 transform .Now press Document > ZAppLink properties > ZAppLink views to prevent sending out your model in the 'edit multiple views of the current tool' mode.Press ZAppLink and start painting across all the subtools even though ZAppLink will transfer the painting to only the active subtool in Zbrush. After you are done painting In Photoshop hit save and duplicate the Photoshop file you just used for the texturing. Now re-enter ZBrush to see the painting update on your first Subtool. elect the second Subtool this time and press ZAppLink. After your model opens in Photoshop drag the layer called layer 1 from your duplicate psd file and replace layer1 in the newly created photoshop file. Continue paiting on your second Subtool while avoiding painting on the seam. Hit save and Alt + tab to Zbrush. The second subtool will now have the new texture which will merge seamlessly with the other subtool.
